Public Service Announcement:
People need to at least try to understand that people who struggle with “mental illness,” addiction, and/or suicidal ideation are not inherently worse, weaker, or less appreciative than their peers who do not. Some of us (surpise!) have a genetic predisposition to these things and/or have gone through some pretty heavy stuff.
Dealing with these things can be pretty shitty. Please don’t make anyone feel shittier by piling on extra guilt and shame. Nobody needs that. Really. So please, just be careful with the words (and attitude!) you use when discussing mental illness. Or, y’know, educate yourself before discussing mental illness. Please.
We need to work to create meaningful dialogue and safe spaces, not encourage the stigmatization of mental illness.
